How My Career Center Saved My Life! - CareerEnlightenment.com

3 Things You Can Do Today to Reach More Students on Social MediaI’m often asked, “That’s great Joshua. But what are some practical things I can do to leverage social media to get my students to engage?”Here are three ideas, but there are many many more:1. Don’t schedule your events on the same day as other school eventsThis might seem obvious, but part of using social media is acknowledging the reality of your audience. And students need to see career services as simply another facet of their college life. Don’t try to compete for their attention. Your office is part of a greater whole.2. Use Facebook to demand accountabilityIf you are on Facebook several times a day, well, so are your students. If you want their attention, “hey, did you work on that resume revision I gave you yet?”. What better way to ensure accountability that Facebook. Just start a new account and connect with every student you meet. Read how one Career Advisor in Oregon uses this approach.3. Creat e cross-promotional opportunities with other officesThe greatest compliment on Twitter is a re-tweet mostly because it exposes your message to a wider audience. I’m pretty sure other departments on school attract a different audience that what you’re used to: theater kids, jocks, programmers, track starsyou name it. If you promote the sports team’s events, they’ll promote yours back. Create alliances for cross-promotion.YOU Have the Most Important Job at Your SchoolSome professors might disagree, but it’s true.Whenever you feel frustrated about keeping up with social media, technology, or hiring trends, remember you are someone’s hero. And, you can share one piece of information you learn from a blog post, email, or lecture with a student and change their life.I try to remember this whenever I’m speaking to a group of students, and I try to remind career advisors when I’m speaking to them. You are someone’s hero because you were willing to break the taboo against ta lking about careers. And, yes, I landed my first real job thanks to the brave warriors at the Brown University career center!

Kent Police Jobs Police Assessment Centre Tips 2018/2019 Kent Police is one of the most popular places for police candidates in the UK to apply to. Every year, the Kent Police jobs team receives many thousands of applications from aspiring police officers. With all this competition, naturally it’s super hard to get a job! Well, fear not, in this blog we’ll break down the Kent Police jobs assessment centre, and give you a breakdown of what to expect. The Kent Police Jobs Assessment CentreThe Kent police assessment centre is designed to assess your suitability for recruitment into the Police Service. The assessment centre is usually conducted over a period of five hours. You’ll be asked to take a verbal ability test, some written exercises, role play, numerical ability and an interview. The Kent police jobs team may also ask you to sit a final interview, after the assessment centre is finished.Kent Police Numerical ReasoningIn the numerical ability test they will ask you to answer multiple-choice questions which will measure your abilit y to use numbers. The test lasts for 23 minutes and there are 21 questions in total. Along with simple maths, you will be presented with a graphs and tables. The questions will also require you to utilise the following numerical skills:AdditionSubtractionMultiplicationDivisionAverages(mean)PercentagesRatiosInterpretation of numbers represented graphicallyYou can use a calculator for this test, but it will be provided to you by Kent Police at the assessment centre.Kent Police Verbal AbilityIn the Kent police verbal ability test they will again ask you to answer multiple choice questions. The verbal ability test lasts for 30 minutes total, and there are 28 questions to answer. The test is split into two sections:Section A of this test has three possible answers where only ONE of which is correct, whereas Section B has four possible answers of which only ONE is correct. In Section A they will give you a number of conclusions which you might come to. You must look at each conclusion and work out if:A â€" the conclusion is true given the situation described and the facts known about it;OrB â€" the conclusion is false given the situation described and the facts known about it;OrC â€" it is impossible to say whether the conclusion is true or false given the situation described and the facts known about it.In Section B they will give you four statements. Your job is to decide which one of the statements is most accurate.Report WritingDuring the assessment centre you will be asked to take two written exercises. These will require you to create an Incident Report Form, based on the information given during the exercise. The following is an overview of the two exercises that you will have to carry out:Written Exercise One. In this exercise, you will need to deal with a customer. The customer will be writing in to complain about how an incident was dealt with by your centre’s security guard. You will be given 7 different sheets of paper, each containing a different take (from different witnesses) on the incident. Normally one of these will be from the security guard, detailing his view. You may or may not also be given CCTV based evidence (in written form) to look over. All 7 witness reports will differ, and therefore there will be discrepancies. Your job is to write down the facts of the case, and at the end, make a recommendation about what should be done.Written Exercise Two. In this exercise, you will watch a 12-minute DVD of an interview between a witness to an incident at a shopping centre, and the security staff working at the centre. You will allowed to take notes during the screening, but there will be no pauses or breaks, and therefore you will need to take down as much important information as possible whilst watching the DVD. Your job is to take down all of the facts, and construct this into an incident report form, all whilst watching the DVD.When you create a written report, the assessor is looking for a well-structured piece of writi ng that is logical and relevant. You should demonstrate a good use and understanding of National Recruitment Assessment Centre grammar, and aim to make zero spelling or grammatical errors. This is extremely important. You also need to make sure that your handwriting is neat and tidy, as this could reflect badly with your assessors. The biggest factor in passing or failing this assessment, is your attention to detail. You cannot afford to miss key pieces of evidence or facts of the case, as you will be penalised for this. A great way to practice for the first exercise in particular is to look at a magazine or newspaper which reports on a particular event. Take a pen and paper, look through the story and then try to write down the key facts about the case.Role Play ExerciseRole play is an integral part of the Kent police jobs assessment centre, and you will need to take part in four role-play exercises during the assessment. This essentially consists of entering a room containing a rol e-play actor, and then playing the part of someone calming them down or resolving their situation for them. You will need to demonstrate the Kent police core competencies during the role-play exercise, displaying traits such as:Being sensitive and supportive;Showing the utmost respect for how others are feeling;Asking follow up questions, and communicating professionallyRespecting confidentialityMaking direct reference to any documentation you have been given.Solving the customer’s issue in a polite and amicable fashion. It is crucial that you learn the core competencies for the assessment centre, and fundamental that you display them during the Kent Police role play. The role play will be divided into two parts â€" preparation and the actual activity element of the exercise.Kent Police InterviewAs part of the Kent police officer assessment centre you will be required to have an interview, which is focused largely around the core competencies. The Kent police jobs interview board wi ll have a number of set questions that they might ask you, all of them related to the Kent police core competencies. Make sure you learn the competencies before attending, otherwise it could be really difficult to pass. The interview will normally last for around 20 minutes. You’ll be asked 4 questions, each of them focusing on how you’ve dealt with particular situations in the past, and all of them focused on how well you demonstrated the core competencies. You’ll have 5 minutes to answer each question, but you should also expect follow up questions based on your response. When answering these questions, make sure that you respond directly to the question, and ensure that you cover the competency that they have asked for â€" as you could be penalised if not. At present I am going through a lot of personal changes within my living environment , but to reach the position of becoming a qualified police officer is still the target I am trying to reach, as I know it will take a bit of time and preparation. I am still very interested in this role as it is still my ambition to attain this position of responsibility and life changing career move. I hope you understand my predicament as I am under the mental-health category. I do know that I need to focus on the objective at hand if I am going to be successful. To be perfectly honest it will take some more time for me to establish myself in the process. Safe is a Four Letter Word

Safe is a Four Letter Word I’ve been encountering a super bad four letter word lately, spoken by both my clients myself. The word ain’t s*** or f*** or even crap-tastic. No. The word is safe. And it’s as bad as any of the words I just listed. Now, when I think of safe, I think of sleepiness hugs hot cocoa being with those I love not being hurt being invulnerable fuzzy teddy bears big down comforters. If I look at it as one cold winter day, a smile comes to my face. But if I look at it as a state of being, I see it as scary. Yes, scary. And boring. And stagnant. And ungrowthful (yes, I made that word up). Safe should be a fear, not a goal. Secure, yes. But not safe. Never safe. It seems that almost every creative client Ive worked with, at some point or another, had dreams goals aspirations that weren’t safe. And when my clients talk safe, theyre talking about money.   Nobody ever speaks of safe in regards to emotion (even though they say they want to feel safe) but they should. Staying at your desk job isn’t safe because you might end up punching your bullying boss in the face going to jail. No, all desk jobs are safe because they provide a steady income. A guaranteed paycheck. A roof above your head food on the table. Yes, life is safe if someone else is cutting the check. Until its not. I have a friend who got laid off from his job a few months ago. At 33 years old, he’s had the same job for over 10 years â€" ever since he graduated from college. He was in sales, his numbers were good, he good consistently above average reports, his company is extremely well-established â€" but it wasn’t enough to save him. Was he safe? You can make things less, well, safe while still reaching for security. I promise. Here are some ways to start: Make a list of all the things that are scaring you, but you know are holding you back. Now let yourself daydream (or journal or paint or write a song) about what it would be like to audition for that band, or leave that job, or work with that dream company. What would be the possible rewards for that risk, and what would be the possible downfalls? Would the possible reward be worth more than the possible fall? And even if you fell, what would you have accomplished? Pick the least scary thing from that list commit to doing it. Remember, your legs are there to pick yourself back up. Spend some time researching a class to take on something new that’s struck your interest. How fun would it be to learn how to play the ukalale, or belly dance, or learn FinalCutPro? If you’re having trouble figuring out what it is you want to do, then think about the types of books articles you read, or what you watch on TV. Someone obsessed with the DIY Network might want to look in to a woodworking class, while someone who is trying to live a green lifestyle can take a weekend class on, uh, living a green lifestyle. Brainstorm ways to achieve your dream while making it as scary-less as possible. For me, coaching was super scary because there’s not a stable income. So, instead of not pursuing coaching, I found a day job I could tolerate that could pay my bills while I got certified started working with clients. Now, when I decide to leave my day job, I know I will have a money cushion in the bank, an already-strong clientele, the tools (like a new website!) that’ll set me up to hit the ground running. How would you face your fear achieve your dream in a perfect world? If you weren’t scared, or didn’t need to worry about money, how would you do it? And don’t let yourself stop at, “I’d open a theater and cast myself as the lead in everything. Duh, Michelle.” Think of the steps you’d need to take to open the theater, why that would be the answer in the first place, what you’d get out of that experience. See the big picture then focus on the details. Who knows what can be translated to The Real World? I know, I know its easier said than done. I, for one, am not a risk taker. I went to Atlantic City for 3 days spent $5 on quarter slots on the way out because I realized I didn’t gamble the entire time. But the safe I’m talking about getting out of is that lazy, comfortable, possibly numbing cocoon that lasts for more than a week’s vacation. While I love wearing my pjs all day for one day, I would hate to wear them all day for the rest of my days. Are you ready to get out of your pjs?

10 Resume Lies to Avoid - Jobscan Blog

10 Resume Lies to Avoid - Jobscan BlogPosted on October 19, 2015August 6, 2018 by James Hu Your resume is often the first and only impression employers get of you prior to the initial interview. It is, often more than any other, the deciding factor in whether or not you receive an interview for the position. This is one reason many find it tempting to embellish certain aspects of their experience, hoping to get a better chance at landing the interview. However, this can cause serious repercussions that may have a lasting effect on your career. Not just with that employer, but with others word can spread about applicants who arent being honest, and many people fired after being caught in resume lies have had their reputations ruined. In some cases, this embellishment is innocent. You may not remember exactly which month you started at a job you had a decade ago, or the exact amount by which you increased ausverkauf. If you are unsure about something, it doesnt belong on your resume. Here are 10 common resume lies to avoid.1. Listing inaccurate educational hintergrundCompeting with a well-educated workforce can be difficult, especially if you have no higher education. Its for this reason that some job seekers opt to add untrue statements to the education section of their resume. This can include anything from listing extra credits or semesters completed to universities the applicant didnt actually attend. Some even change their major on their resume to better fit the position to which they are applying. The reality is that checking up on someones education is remarkably easy now, and par for the course for most human resources departments. If someone is caught fibbing on their resume, the result can include termination and even being automatically denied a chance at another position. If you feel like you must exaggerate your level of education to be considered for a job, chances are that you are targeting the wrong job.2. Listing technical skills you dont haveHaving rel evant technical skills makes you a desirable candidate for a job, but once you come to work the first day, its up to you to back up anything you boast in your resume. In many cases, the interview will test your level of knowledge in a specific technical field. A developer might be asked to write or fix a block of code, a writer may be given a small writing assignment, etc.Coming in to an interview based on having a certain set of skills, and not being able to perform them during the interview, can prevent you from landing or keeping the job.In many cases, technical know-how can be taught on the job, and employers are flexible with this as long as the applicant is honest about their level of experience going in to it.You can teach technical skills, but you cant teach honesty.3. Inaccurate employment datesIt can be difficult to remember exactly when you started or left a place of employment, especially years after the fact. That said, its better to be vague than inaccurate.Detailed emp loyment dates are important to include on your resume, but if you cant recall the exact month you started job, you may be better off listing just the year.Alternatively, you may have the option to call your previous employer to confirm your precise employment dates. This is exactly what a responsible employer would do prior to hiring someone.4. Overblown salary historyIts best to leaveinformation about your previous salaries off your resume. However, some employers do ask for it. Like your employment dates, this information can be confirmed with a phone call, and inaccuracies here are taken as signs of dishonesty. This is especially true if you overstate the salary, as it would be seen as a trick to receive a higher offer.5. Name-droppingIf you claim to have worked with a famous name or big brand in a previous position, you should be ready to have that claim tested. You never know who your potential employer might know.Should your claim be tested and found inaccurate, you may lose yo ur reputation with more than just the company youre applying to.6. Language skillsHaving a grasp of multiple languages looks great on a resume. For an employer, it equates to a useful tool in the event that someone is needed who speaks that language. However, this can blow up in your face if you boast fluency in another language you arent actually fluent in. You never know when or under what circumstances you might be called on to open dialogue with someone in their native language.7. ResponsibilitiesIts customary to list some of your key responsibilities at previous jobs in your resume (though of course its best to create a resume full of accomplishments). This can help the reader learn more about your experience and gain an understanding of whether you are capable of handling the role they are looking to fill. However, your responsibilities at previous places of employment can be confirmed. If you say you led a team when you didnt, or that you were in dienstgrad of social media mana gement when you werent, those lines in your resume can come back to haunt you.8. Job titlesApplying for a job as a sales manager, but the last position you had was as a sales associate? You may have filled in for the sales manager at your last job, but if you werent actually a sales manager, dont list it as your title. One of the main questions employers ask during the background check, or when talking to your job references, is the position you held at the company. Either they will state what you listed in your resume, or they will ask for the position. In either case, being caught in a lie here means no job for you.9. Volunteer activitiesVolunteer work is a great addition to a resume. It offers insight into your character, and can allow you to show off additional skills or fill in where employment gaps might leave your resume a little light. However, volunteer work is confirmable. Someone at the office might volunteer for that organization themselves, and many (if not most) voluntee r organizations keep records for their own legal reasons. Dont exaggerate your contributions to any organization or effortpaid or not.10. Certifications and other titlesFor a little money, you can become an ordained minister angeschlossen From some of these same organizations, you can get a doctorate or be declared a saint. While you might be able to perform a wedding ceremony, most such titles do not carry any legal weight. Because of this, you actually run the risk of getting your future employer sued for liability if they present you as having a specific certification or title when, in fact, you dont have anything legitimate to back it up.Accrediting agencies keep detailed records of people who receive legally recognized titles from accredited sources. If your name isnt on these lists, then you will run into some problems during a background check. When it comes to resumes, honesty is the best policy. Its better to leave out details than to give false or embellished statements. Eve n if your lies land you a job, false statements can put your career at risk.Honesty is the best policy, scan your resume here?span data-mce-type=bookmark style=display inline-block width 0px overflow hidden line-height 0 class=mce_SELRES_start?/spanspan data-mce-type=bookmark style=display inline-block width 0px overflow hidden line-height 0 class=mce_SELRES_start?/spanspan data-mce-type=bookmark style=display inline-block width 0px overflow hidden line-height 0 class=mce_SELRES_start?/spanspan data-mce-type=bookmark style=display inline-block width 0px overflow hidden line-height 0 class=mce_SELRES_startspan data-mce-type=bookmark style=display inline-block width 0px overflow hidden line-height 0 class=mce_SELRES_start?/span?/spanFacebook Commentswpdevar_comment_1 span,wpdevar_comment_1 iframewidth100% important
